What is a sports massage?

Sports massage is a targeted, deep-tissue massage designed to help relieve muscular tension, reduce pain, improve flexibility, and aid recovery. It’s not just for athletes; anyone experiencing tightness, discomfort, or stress-related tension can benefit.

What should I wear?

We want you to feel comfortable and properly supported during your session.

Here's what we recommend:

  • Men: Loose-fitting shorts or boxers/briefs, and a t-shirt or vest top.

  • Women: Loose-fitting shorts, a sports bra, and a vest top.

You may also be covered with a towel throughout the treatment, with only the area being worked on being exposed.

Will it hurt?

Sports massage can feel intense at times, but it shouldn't be unbearable. We always work within your personal pain threshold and won’t go above a 7/10 on the pain scale.
Throughout the session, we'll check in regularly to make sure the pressure is okay for you.

I want loads of pressure – can you do that?

Absolutely! If you prefer deep pressure, we can apply it.

Just remember: more pressure doesn’t always mean better results.  We’ll work with your body and check in regularly to ensure you’re getting the most effective treatment, not just the most force.

I’ve never had a sports massage before – what can I expect?

We'll start with a quick chat to understand any issues you're having and what you want from the session. Then, you’ll lie down, and we’ll begin the massage. We may ask you to change positions during the treatment depending on the areas we’re working on.

You can expect a mix of techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and muscle stretching. You might feel some soreness afterwards (a bit like post-gym soreness), but that should pass in 24–48 hours.

How long is a sports massage session?

The first session (called first session) is an hour and half.  This gives us enough time to talk through your issues, conduct assessments and come up with a treatment plan.  We aim to spend roughly 15 minutes on this and the rest of the time on a massage!

After this, most sessions are 1 hour, which allows us time to assess, treat, and give aftercare advice. Shorter or longer sessions may be available depending on your needs; just ask when booking.

Do I need to be injured to have a sports massage?

Not at all.  Sports massage is great for injury prevention, stress relief, and general maintenance. Many people book in regularly to help stay mobile, flexible, and pain-free, even if they’re not currently injured.

Will I be sore after my massage?

It’s common to feel a bit sore or achy for 24–48 hours after your treatment, similar to post-exercise soreness. This is normal and part of your body’s healing response.  Just make sure you keep moving and do the stretches that we will send you through email.

How often should I have a sports massage?

It depends on your goals.  For general maintenance, once a month is a good starting point. If you’re training regularly or recovering from an injury, weekly or fortnightly sessions may be more effective.

Can I train after my massage?

We usually recommend allowing at least 24 hours of recovery time before heavy training.  A light walk or gentle movement is fine, but rest helps your body get the most out of the treatment.

What areas of the body do you treat?

We can treat the entire body, but we’ll tailor each session based on your needs.  Common areas include the neck, shoulders, back, glutes, legs, calves, and arms. Just let us know where you’re feeling tight or restricted.

What if I’m nervous or self-conscious?

That’s completely normal, especially if this is your first massage.  Your comfort is our top priority. You maybe properly draped with towels, and we’ll clearly explain everything before we begin. If you ever feel uncomfortable, just let us know, we’re here to help, not judge.

Can I talk during the massage?

Yes, you can talk as much or as little as you like. Some clients enjoy chatting, while others prefer to relax in silence. We’ll also check in with you now and then about pressure and comfort, so feel free to speak up any time.
